God is Good

How would you define a person described as being “good”? Would this be someone who doesn’t break the law; someone who doesn’t use foul language; someone who is honest and has high moral convictions; or someone who does nice things for other people? All of these might apply to a good person; however, even the best person still has some faults.

One of the attributes or characteristics of God is his goodness. In Genesis 1:31a we see that God is the originator of all things good when we read

“Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good.” (NKJV)

There is no other source of goodness outside of God. He is the sole source. Authors confirmed this fact for us in Psalms 16:2 –

“O my soul, you have said to the Lord, You are my Lord, My goodness is nothing apart from you”

and in Psalms 119:68 –

“You are good, and do good; Teach me Your statutes”. (NKJV)

The goodness of God is absolute. His purity is sure. There is not even a hint of evil in God. God is never less than good. If he were to be, then he would no longer be God.

Jesus confirms God’s goodness in Matthew 19:16-17 which reads,

“Now behold, one came and said to Him, “Good Teacher what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life” So He said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but One, that is God. But, if you want to enter into life keep the commandments.”

So although we may know good people, none of us are totally good. We are all sinners by nature and daily we must choose between good and evil thoughts and/or actions. As Christians we are to strive to be Christ like, but all of us sin to some capacity every day. None of us are totally pure in thought and deed. Only One is good, pure and that One is God.

It is out of his goodness that God chooses to bless us even when we may fall short and be undeserving of his unmerited favor. It is out of his goodness that God begins a “good work in us”. (See Philippians 1:6)

Scripture

“Now behold, one came and said to Him, “Good Teacher what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life” So He said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but One, that is God. But, if you want to enter into life keep the commandments.”

Prayer

Oh God, help us to be observant each day of Your goodness in our lives and in our world.

In Jesus Name,

Amen
